Astro Bot Is Game Of The Year And People Are Mad

admin December 11, 2025

While I’d never say any of its main worlds ever approach being truly “difficult” in the pursuit of that 100% completion goal, some enemies or obstacles did take a few tries. Thankfully, checkpoints are often generously and frequently located, meaning you’re only ever moments away from the spot of your previous demise. This proverb rings loud and true for Team ASOBI as they are flung into AAA spotlight. The PlayStation first party studio got its start in 2013 with The Playroom, an augmented reality tech demo coinciding with the release of the PS4. The Playroom was comprised of a collection of mini games intended to demonstrate the PlayStation camera and DualShock 4. Although at the time, the bot we would one day be gushing over, looked slightly different.

In another that sees Astro shrink to the size of a mouse, the miniature world reveals new woodsy and backyard-like scenery that regular-sized Astro couldn’t reach. Some levels even drastically change the art style, as seen in a series of voxel-art levels I was glad to discover each time, or some others I dare not spoil. A follow-up to the PS5 pack-in game Astro’s Playroom, it’s a colorful platformer starring an adorable robot named Astro. Unlike most of Astro’s previous outings, this is a full-sized game, with over 50 planets for you to explore. It’s available to buy in physical and digital form, plus in a digital deluxe edition.

Team Asobi’s success with creating a game to showcase new PlayStation technology led to its next game, The Playroom VR. Similar to its predecessor, The Playroom VR was a free launch game for the PlayStation VR that functioned as a showcase for Sony’s venture into the world of virtual reality. While the team’s focus was on creating a collection of short multiplayer experiences, there was one exception.

Once you have a total of 16 Puzzle Pieces, they will automatically fill in the Gatcha Lab puzzle and the Gatcha Lab will appear at your Crash Site. Find your first Puzzle Piece to unlock the A Puzzling Start trophy. You will come across your first Puzzle Pieces in the Sky Garden. Check out our Sky Garden walkthrough to learn where to find the three Puzzle Pieces hidden there. Luckily, none of the collectibles or Hidden Trophies in Astro Bot are missable, so even if you miss one of these things during your first playthrough, you can always go back to grab what you’re missing for that Platinum Trophy. I’m not a trophy hunter and usually just move on after it gets grindy.

Most of the Astro Bot cameo characters are pretty easy to identify, but there are a few VIP Bots who are obscure and thus can be difficult to place. Unfortunately, the future is a bit uncertain for Astro Bot, as Team Asobi hasn’t revealed what’s next after this DLC pack. Considering the popularity of the game, it’s easy to assume more DLC is on the way, though as of now, nothing is official. What fans do know is that Sony has been thrilled with Astro Bot’s reception and performance. In fact, Sony announced more games like Astro Bot are being planned, expanding its family-friendly offerings.

Marketing And Release

The bots turn around and shake their booties at Astro right before he punches them into the DualSense. On the pause screen, you can flick all of your collected bots out of the digital controller and they flail in mid-air before landing safely back inside the touchpad. Entire levels are built around Astro Bot’s power-ups, but most aren’t just one-off gimmicks. 789win kicks off as Astro is sailing across the cosmos with hundreds of his buddies on their PS5 mothership, just enjoying their quant robot lives.

Pitch-perfect Platforming

It comes with a plethora of powers, but they never feel overused. There are four powers that only feature in a single level each. One of them is a set of cymbals that moves the platforms of the world around that other, lesser games might build their whole universe around. Astro Bot puts it in the final treat that you only get to even play if you beat every other level, including all the secret ones (and boy, are there a lot of secret ones). But it’s not just PS1 reminiscing that makes Astro Bot so great—not by a long shot.

Astro Bot pulls out all the stops when it comes to referencing older titles in the game. Not only are the character designs perfect for distinguishing the bots, but these are also apparent in some gameplay segments. One example is the game’s callback to Ape Escape where you’ll be chasing the apes around the map the way you would in the original game.

Selected by a combination of jury vote and public opinion, this is widely considered one of the most prestigious awards in the video game industry. The award was presented by last year’s winner, Swen Vincke, director of Baldur’s Gate 3, and accepted by the game’s director and Team Asobi studio head Nicolas Doucet. [newline]Doucet expressed his gratitude to the decades of platformers that came before Astro Bot, which also took home awards for Best Action/Adventure Game, Best Family Game, and Best Game Direction during the ceremony. You’ll pick up an awful lot of coins exploring all the planets in Astro Bot. At first, that huge trove of gold may seem useless, but once you’ve beaten the first boss in the Gorilla Nebula, you’ll unlock the Gacha Lab at the Crash Site. Here, you can spend coins to win up to 169 PlayStation-themed collectibles, including skins for the Dual Speeder. Later on, you’ll also unlock the Dual Speeder Garage, where you can personnalise Astro’s controller plane, and the Changing Room to switch up Astro’s look to outfits collected in the Gacha Lab.

This is the third full wave of Astro Bot downloadable content, which began with a similarly structured five speedrun levels after launch and, until this release today, most recently saw a special Christmas themed level released. “Each level comes with a brand new Special Bot to rescue and, once that’s done, can be replayed in Time Attack mode with online rankings.” Sony is releasing another stream of Astro Bot expansions, the first of which is available today, February 13, adding a total of five new levels and as many special bots. This is joined by a PlayStation 5 Pro patch, which allows the best resolution while running at 60 frames per second. Team Asobi has teased that tools will eventually be added to Astro Bot that should appeal to speedrunners.
